Beacon for iOS

When I send a command to Beacon, it tells my media component to do it twice.

Some brands have different requirements for how a command is sent than others. An update to Beacon's firmware fixes most of these issues. You can update the firmware on your Beacon by downloading the Griffin Utility app from the App Store and following the in-app instructions.

If you are still having issues after updating Beacon's firmware, you may need to make an adjustment in the Dijit app. From the Devices tab, select the device with this issue. Tap Edit in the top right corner, and then select Advanced Options. Select IR Repeats and change the number to 2. Test your device. If this did not fix the problem, change the number to 3.

If you are still experiencing issues, contact Tech Support for further assistance.

I'm having trouble finding the Dijit app.

Since Beacon was released, the Dijit app has undergone some changes. You should still be able to find it by searching for "Dijit" on the App Store, but the name is now "NextGuide Remote with Free TV Guide, Netflix Queue Management..." Unfortunately, the app is now only available in the US and Canada.

Can I use rechargeable batteries?

Yes, any AA battery will work to power the Beacon, including rechargeable batteries.

Will Beacon work with devices that use an RF remote?

Beacon uses an infra red (IR) signal to communicate with components. Unfortunately, it cannot be used to control components that use a radio frequency (RF) remote.

I can't find the product I want to control in Dijit's list of codes. Can I still control that product with Beacon?

Beacon is a learning remote, which means that if your component is not in Dijit's list of devices, you can use Beacon's learning function to add any IR remote to your listing.

Which devices can I use with Beacon?

Beacon can be used with any Apple Touchscreen Device with Bluetooth support, as long as it's running iOS 4.0 or later. This includes:

  • iPad
  • iPad 2
  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 3G & 3GS
  • iPod touch 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation

Can Beacon control devices all around the room, or does it have to be pointed in a certain direction?

Beacon is a unidirectional device, like most other IR remotes. It will need to be pointed in the general direction of the component you want to control.

What's Beacon's range? How far can it be from my entertainment center?

Beacon's range is about 30 feet, line of sight. This means that there needs to be a clear line of sight between the Beacon and the component you want to control.

Can Beacon control a device in a different room?

Beacon is an infra red (IR) remote, which means that it must have a clear line of sight to the component it is controlling. This means that it cannot be used to control a component in a different room.

If you'd like, you can move the Beacon unit into another room, then use Dijit's "Rooms" feature to set up Beacon to work with the components in that room.

I have a Bluetooth capable smartphone, but it isn't running iOS or Android. Can I still use Beacon?

Beacon requires the Dijit app to function. That means your smartphone will need to be running an operating system for which the Dijit App is available in order to use Beacon.

How long will the batteries last?

Beacon's batteries should last around 6-8 weeks before needing to be replaced.

How far can I be from Beacon? Can I still control it from another room?

Maximum range for bluetooth is 30 feet, but that range can be affected by many factors, including your home's wiring, insulation, plumbing, WiFi, even other Bluetooth signals. You should have no problem controlling Beacon from the same room, but from the next room over, range may become an issue.

What happens if more than one paired smartphone is within range of Beacon?

If more then one paired smartphone is within range, Beacon will pair to the last used device. To switch control to another previously paired smartphone, press and hold the top of the Beacon unit for three seconds. Beacon will disconnect from the current iOS device and reconnect with the next most-recently paired device.

Can I pair Beacon with more than one smartphone?

Yes, Beacon can be paired with multiple smartphones.

If more then one paired smartphone is within range, Beacon will pair to the last used device. To switch control to another previously paired smartphone, press and hold the top of the Beacon unit for three seconds. Beacon will disconnect from the current iOS device and reconnect with the next most-recently paired device.

Does Beacon have an on/off switch? How do I turn it off?

Beacon does not have an on/off switch. To turn Beacon completely off, you will have to remove the batteries. To conserve battery power, Beacon will switch to a low-power sleep mode 60 minutes after it disconnects from your device.

If I have previously paired my smartphone, how do I reconnect with Beacon?

To reconnect to Beacon, press and release the top of the Beacon unit once. Beacon will automatically reconnect to the last used smartphone.

I have too many controls for one screen.

You can add screens for more controls, or move controls to an additional screen. In the Edit Layout screen, you can move controls to additional screens.

What is the maximum number of devices I can add?

There is no maximum. However, if you have more than five devices, additional devices will appear on the next screen. Dijit uses standard iPhone/iPad page dot notation to show that there is more than one page.

What are Activities?

Activities allow you to send multiple commands to your devices with one tap. Typically, they are used for starting up all necessary devices to watch TV or a movie, and for turning off these devices. Dijit provides you with suggested activities based on your equipment, but you can define additional activities on your own.

Not everything is turning on/off properly when I use an Activity.

You can customize your activities in Advanced Settings on the Activity Summary screen. Also, check that your Beacon is properly aligned by checking the icon on the bottom.

I want my TV Activity to always tune my TV to my favorite channel when it starts up.

In Activity setup, turn on Advanced Settings from the summary screen, and pick the channel numbers from the Add Action screen. You will have to add each channel number individually. Don't forget to add an 'Enter' command if your TV or set-top box requires it to initiate the channel change. You can also set other start up actions such as muting.

When I swipe the pad for my device, nothing happens.

The swipe must begin on the side of the pad you are swiping from. It will not work if you start your swipe from outside the pad area, such as the background area around the pad.

What are the benefits of logging in to Facebook or Dijit while using the app?

A Facebook or Dijit account allows you to save your profile. If your mobile device has a problem, you can retrieve your profile and all your information will be restored. You can also share Dijit settings with another device. Also, logging in allows you to easily track the viewing preferences of other Dijit users.

The program guide is loading very slowly.

Program guide data is delivered to your phone from Dijit servers. If it is loading slowly, please check to make sure wi-fi is turned on in the Settings of your mobile device. This should result in proper delivery of the program guide.

How can I tell if my Beacon batteries are dying?

There is a battery meter in the Dijit app. If you are connected to a Beacon, go to Settings in the Dijit app and you will see a battery meter.

I'm having trouble connecting my iOS device to Beacon!

Here are the steps to follow to make sure you're pairing Beacon correctly.

1. Make sure you have fresh batteries installed correctly in the Beacon.
2. Turn on Bluetooth on your iOS device. To do this, go to Settings > General > Bluetooth, and then select ON.
3. Press and hold the top of the Beacon until you see the blue LED indicator light flashing rapidly. Once you see that, release the button.
4. While the blue LED light is flashing rapidly, go to your iOS device and select Beacon under Bluetooth devices.

If you've tried these steps and Beacon still isn't paired, please contact our support team.

How many devices can I pair with Beacon, and can I switch between them?

Beacon can pair with up to eight mobile devices, and supports switching control between the two most recently connected devices. If there are three or more paired mobile devices within range, Beacon will only switch between the two most recently connected. If you want to control Beacon with a device other than the two most recently connected devices, just hold down the Beacon for 3 seconds to put it into discoverable mode, then connect your device.

How do I update the firmware on Beacon?

Occasionally, updates to Beacon's firmware are released via the Griffin Utility app. These updates may provide additional functionality or fix minor bugs. You can update the firmware on your Beacon by downloading the Griffin Utility App from the App Store and following the in-app instructions.

Will my iOS Beacon work with the Android Dijit app?

No, Beacon is platform-specific. You will only be able to use the iOS app with your iOS Beacon. To use an Android device with Beacon, you will need the Beacon for Android.

When I select a program to watch from the Dijit Guide, Beacon sends the command to the wrong device.

Check to be sure you have the correct device set for your TV tuner. In the Dijit app, go to Settings > General > Set TV Tuner, then select the device that you use to change your TV channels. Beacon will now send the channel commands from the Guide to that device.

Does Dijit's NextGuide work with Beacon?

There are two apps with NextGuide in the name. The first, Dijit Remote with NextGuide, is a recent update to the previously published Dijit App. This app is fully compatible with Beacon.

The same publisher has also published a standalone app called NextGuide. This is a TV listings app, which has no remote functionality. It is not compatible with Beacon.
